Blossoms in the Dust (1941)
Greer Garson received her second Oscar nomination for her moving portrayal of Edna Gladney, a  woman who defies social convention to lend aid to foundling children after the Depression. She successfully petitions the state to overturn laws that discriminate against children born to unwed mothers, and establishes the Gladney Center for Adoption.

Battleship Potemkin (1925)
Intended as propaganda to encourage Russian unity following the Revolution, this silent film establishes a lasting foundation in the use of imagery to communicate in films. Sailors on the Potemkin revolt against the harsh conditions on the Tsarist naval vessel. Led by Vakulinchuk, who is killed,  the people in the port of Odessa honor him as a symbol of revolution. Tsarist soldiers massacre civilians to quell the uprising. A squadron of ships is sent to overthrow the Potemkin, but the ships refuse to attack.

Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst (2004)
This documentary investigates the SLA, an American terrorist group that kidnapped Patty Hearst, the daughter of publisher Randolph Hearst, and her subsequent assimilation into the group. Robert Stone directs this riveting account of an organization with utopian ideals that went tragically wrong. Includes interviews with SLA founder Russ Little (Netflix).
